The Reader’s Digest for December 1955 contained an arti-cle called “Our Starving Teen-Agers,” that said:
Investigators are now convinced that teen-age malnu-trition is nationwide. Their studies show that the average American child is correctly nourished solely up to the age of 2; thereafter his diet declines steadily till it hits an alarming low in the teens. . . .

They do not get enough protein to create sound tissues, enough calcium for strong bones and smart teeth, enough vitamins for steady nerves, traditional blood and efficient vision. . . . In addition to manual manipulation or stretching of tight muscle tissue orjoints, Chiropractor in Toronto commonly use warmth or ice packs, ultrasoundtreatment, and other modalities similar to those of bodily therapists. Sub-sequent studies of 59,000 boys and women in thirty-eight states reveal the nationwide situation. In New York state, for example, solely 21 percent of youth-age boys and twelve percent of the ladies were getting the suggested food allowances. Conditions are no better in the agricultural areas than in the massive cities and bear no relationship to pover-ty….
